Ethics in Supervision: Paraprofessionals, Residents, and the Use of AI

Supervision used to be one relationship pointed at one goal: getting a resident ready for independent practice. It isn't anymore. You may be supervising a QMHP who will never seek licensure, a BHT whose scope is narrower than you assume, and a resident who's using AI in ways neither of you has talked about. Each of these carries a different ethical weight. This workshop gives you a way to tell the situations apart and a decision process that holds up across all of them, whether the question is scope of practice, gatekeeping, or how to coach responsible AI use.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Distinguish the scope of practice and supervisory obligations for Virginia's registered behavioral health paraprofessionals (BHT-A, BHT, QMHP-T, QMHP) from those for residents and supervisees on a licensure track.
Apply an ethical decision-making process to supervision scenarios involving scope limits, gatekeeping, or supervisor liability across these tiers.
Describe the supervisor's responsibility for guiding and monitoring supervisee use of AI, drawing on current professional guidance.

2.0 CE credits (120 instructional minutes). The 15-minute break is not eligible for credit. JEH Growth Strategies, LLC is an approved provider of continuing education by the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling. The Virginia Board of Counseling and the Virginia Board of Social Work accept continuing education from providers approved by another state board of counseling or social work. This program is therefore acceptable for Virginia LPC, LMFT, and LCSW continuing education, including hours toward supervision and ethics requirements.
