THE SLEEP-DEPRIVED COUNSELOR:
Why Your Sleep Is an Ethical Issue and How to Improve It

Would you knowingly show up to a session impaired? Research suggests that 22 to 45% of mental health professionals experience clinically significant insomnia, and the effects are not subtle. Sleep deprivation reduces empathy, impairs clinical judgment, and erodes the emotional regulation your clients depend on. When you are sleep-deprived, your clients pay a price. That is not a wellness problem. It is an ethics problem.

This two-session workshop invites you to take that seriously. Session one builds the case that sleep health belongs in your professional development conversation alongside supervision, continuing education, and self-care. You will explore how sleep deprivation compromises the very competencies your ethics code requires you to maintain. The ethical stakes extend beyond your own practice as well. Sleep problems disproportionately affect minoritized and psychiatric populations, and understanding those disparities is part of the culturally responsive, ethical practice your clients deserve.

Session two puts evidence into action. You will assess your own sleep health, learn the core behavioral principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia, and build a personal sleep improvement plan you can begin using immediately. No specialist training is required. You do not need to become a sleep clinician to benefit from this workshop or to begin applying what you learn.

Counselors who sleep better, counsel better. This workshop gives you both the reason and the roadmap.
